Running in Copenhagen
A flat city with a lot of wind.
Copenhagen is almost perfectly flat, wrapped around a clean harbour and laced with car-free paths. You can run from Nyhavn to the Little Mermaid in ten minutes and be among deer in Dyrehaven twenty minutes after that by S-train.
What shapes a run here is the weather off the Øresund: soft light in summer, dark afternoons and steady wind in winter. And, of course, the bikes. Our guides cover all of it, along with the races, routes and people behind the city's running culture.
Quick answers
Running in Copenhagen: questions & answers
Where is the best place to run in Copenhagen?
The classic answer is the Lakes (Søerne): a flat, car-free 6 km loop on the edge of the centre. For harbour views, run the Harbour Bridges Loop (6.9 km) or Kastellet and Langelinie (6.6 km). For forest, take the S-train to Klampenborg and run in Dyrehaven.
When is the Copenhagen Marathon?
The next Copenhagen Marathon is on Sun 9 May 2027, starting at 09:30 on Øster Allé by Fælledparken. Entry is through the organiser, Sparta, on copenhagenmarathon.dk. See all running events in Copenhagen.
When is the Copenhagen Half Marathon, and how do I get a place?
The next Copenhagen Half Marathon (CPH Half) is on Sun 19 September 2027. Places are allocated by lottery through cphhalf.dk, and demand is far higher than the number of places. See marathon vs half marathon.
Are there free group runs in Copenhagen?
Yes. Four free, timed 5K parkruns are held every Saturday at 09:00: Fælledparken, Amager Fælled, Amager Strandpark and Damhusengen. Social crews such as NBRO Running and Mikkeller Running Club also run for free, many in English. See running clubs in Copenhagen.
Can I run on the bike lanes in Copenhagen?
No. Copenhagen's cycle tracks are for bikes, and they are busy and fast. Run on the pavement or on shared paths, keep right, and look both ways before you cross a cycle track. Read our guide to running and cycling etiquette.
Where can I buy running shoes in Copenhagen?
Specialist stores such as Marathon Sport (Østerbro and Vesterbro) and Løberen near Nørreport give proper shoe advice. Outdoor stores near Nørreport and Østerport stock trail shoes and wet-weather layers. See all running stores in Copenhagen.
